Even if Assad survives, will we, the West, having (as it will be perceived) acted in the clearest possible way in support of the anti-Assad forces, be able to stand aside and let him regain control of Syria? It is not difficult to anticipate the arguments about national power and prestige that will be put forward for further action, which are exactly the arguments that have brought President Obama to where he is now.
