You drive through a swampy coastal landscape of sugar plantations and rice fields, past bungalows on stilts, up to the gates of the estate, which are patrolled by a tatty gang of vultures. Inside, it’s an extraordinarily beautiful place – roughly two and a half miles end to end of jungle garden, exotic plants and clearings festooned with grey Spanish moss, like Miss Havisham’s drawing room, all surrounded by marshes and cypress swamps that occasionally encroach inland to form lakes that are positively sinister with alligators. Only members of the McIlhenny family can buy houses on the island and these are hidden discreetly behind acacia hedges or groves of live oaks. The original old brick Tabasco factory was built here in the late 1800s and now houses the Tabasco headquarters, shaded by a massive live oak, the Royal Warrant proudly nailed by the front door.
