We decided Crambe cordifolia, with its fabulous huge leaves, was too problematic as it almost disappears having flowered, leaving a massive gap. It also needs a rich soil to flower annually. In my late summer garden I am enjoying the flat, perfect, paler dusky pink heads of Sedum telephium 'Matrona’ and Aconitum carmichaelii 'Arensii’, so elegant with their stout, tall (1m/3.3ft) stems of strong blue flowers that are rabbit and deer resistant. Both are good stayers. Though my new favourite has to be Salvia 'Amistad’, with its sensational, airy, deep purple flowers.
