Thus, though he admits that the warhead involved in the Damascus incident didn’t explode, he warns that “if it had, much of Arkansas would be gone”. That’s not remotely true. A 20-megaton thermonuclear warhead has a blast radius of 10 kilometres, or about 315 square kilometres. The state of Arkansas spreads over 133,733 square kilometres, so the weapon would have caused destruction across 0.2 per cent of the state. The silo was located in a remote area, surrounded by large farms. So, instead of much of Arkansas being “gone”, the explosion would have destroyed a few barns and vaporised some cattle. Sad for the cows, but not Armageddon.
